Note: Network Installation - requires a special license agreement. |
This version of Peak Training is designed to install the database and the media files to a network drive. A seperate install is also supplied to make it easy for client machines to install the course files from the network and setup the required ODBC connections. This version does not require the CD to be in the machine to run the course. |
| 1. |
We begin by creating a share folder/drive on a workstation/server. In my example, I am using a workstation that resides on our network, IT-TECH2, as my Peak Training "Server". You can name the folder anything, but to avoid confusion, I have named this folder 'Peakshare'. Share the folder to everyone. (If you have a separate drive [i.e. X:] that is fine, as well. The drive has to be accessible to everyone on the network that will be taking Peak Training.)
| 2. |
Within this folder/drive we will create three new folders. Once again, for the sake of simplicity these are name "Media", "Database", and "Client". By default, because these folders reside in a shared folder/drive they are already shared.
| 3. |
Now that we have our destination folders created we can begin installing the courseware. Place the course CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. Left-click the 'Start' button (usually bottom left of window) and left-click 'Run'.
| 4. |
In the "command line", type the letter of your CD-ROM drive, a colon, a backslash ( \ ), then type setup.exe. Left-click 'OK' to start the install.

| 5. |
The "Made with Macromedia" logo will appear briefly.

| 6. |
The Welcome screen will then appear announcing that Peak Training install is ready to begin. Left-click 'Next' to move on.

| 7. |
The "End-User License Agreement" window will appear next. After reading the EULA, left-click the 'Yes' button to continue with the install. Click 'No' if you wish to abort the installation.

| 8. |
Next we must select the type of install. Client and Network are listed. Highlight 'Network' and left-click 'Next'.

| 9. |
With the next window, we select the destination of our program files. In this case, we use the 'Browse' button to find the folders that we created earlier. Just select the folder/drive that is shared for the program files. When you are ready, left-click the 'Next' button.

| 10. |
In this next window we select the destination for the database. Once again, browse to the folders that were created earlier and point the destination path to the database folder in the shared folder. When ready, left-click 'Next' to continue.
| 11. |
The destination for the media files is next. This, of course, goes in the media folder we created. Select 'Next' to move on.
| 12. |
The next window verifies that the chosen paths are correct. When ready, select 'Next'. (Note: be sure to remember the database and media paths; we will be using these later.)

| 13. |
Over the next series of windows will be the progress of the course files being installed. This step takes awhile. The final window you see reports that setup is complete. It may or may not ask to restart the machine. Select 'Finish' to complete the server setup. |
| 14. |
Before we start installing the courses to any workstation, we have to add the files to the server that will be used to install the course to client computers. Browse to the Client folder on the Peak Training CD-ROM; the folder in Client will be the long name of the course, in this example "Lift Truck Safety Basic Orientation". Copy this entire folder to the Client folder we created earlier.

| 15. |
After the copy is finished open up the folder we just copied into the \peakshare\client folder. Then open the Peak50 folder.

| 16. |
Our next step is to modify the Path.reg file. Right-click on path.reg and select properties.

| 17. |
In properties, make sure that the Read-Only attribute IS NOT selected. No checkmark in the box. Select 'Apply' if necessary, then select 'OK'.

| 18. |
Right-click on the the path.reg again and select Edit.

| 19. |
This will have opened up the the path.reg file in notepad. We will modify this file to reflect where our database and media paths lead to. Ninety percent (90%) of problem with the network install are found here. Make sure the path is correct! In our example, we used a folder named Peakshare on the hard drive of a computer named IT-TECH2 for our folders. Therefore, my path.reg file will look like this (UNC version [Universal Naming Convention]:

If for any reason you will use mapped drives (the files were loaded to a drive X, therefore every client computer has a mapped drive X leading to it), your path.reg file will look like this (mapped drive version):

| 20. |
Save the file and move on to the workstation that will use the Peak Training Software. |
| 21. |
At the client computer, browse through the network (or your mapped drive) to \Client\XX (where XX is the full name of the course directory.).
Double click the PeakSetup icon to start client course setup.

| 22. |
The first thing that happens is the files are extracted from the server to the local machine.

| 23. |
After that the "Made with Macromedia" logo will appear. Then you will see the Welcome window for Client setup. Select 'Next' to begin. |
| 24. |
Next is the EULA. Select 'Yes' to continue course setup or 'No' to abort. |
| 25. |
For our destination path, the only path that is needed is the program files path for the local computer. This will default to Program Files, you may change this if you wish. |
| 26. |
The destination path summary will be next. As you can see, the setup already knows where to look for the database and media files. This was done when we ran the PeakSetup.exe from the client folder.

| 27. |
This version of Summit's software requires that Access 2000 Run-time is installed on the computer before the course is. This will happen regardless if you have Access 2000 or Access XP. These files are necessary for the software to run properly. This will only have to be done once if you have multiple titles to install. After the destination windows a dialog box will appear stating that Access Run-Time needs to be installed. This box also warns that by doing this it will overwrite any existing database associated with Peak Training. Left-click 'Yes' to continue. (If this is your second time through the setup, this will not happen. Goto step 33.)

| 28. |
By selecting 'Yes', Access Run-time is now ready to install. In the next window, left-click the 'Install Now' button to begin Access 2000 Run-time installation.

| 29. |
A progress window will then appear showing the progress of the installation.

| 30. |
After the progress windows, there will be a window reporting that Access Run-time has been installed successfully. Left-click 'Finish' to move on. (If your operating system is windows 95, NT, or 98 there will be another window reporting that windows installer needs to restart the computer. Left-click the 'Yes' button to restart now.) The window shown below (bottom) will appear regardless of your Operating System. Left-click 'OK'. If your OS is NOT 95, NT, or 98 continue to Step 33.
| 31. |
Another window box will appear announcing that Windows needs to be restarted. Left-click 'OK' to do so. Note: on some systems you may have to manually restart the computer; this is normal.

| 32. |
After restarting, this window box will appear. This shows the final progress of the run-time setup. When it is done, the desktop will be shown again. At this point, setup has to be run again. Repeat steps 21-26. The Access 2000 Run-time setup will not happen again.

| 33. |
The files will now be loaded onto the system. When the progress bar gets close to 100% you will see a box that states: "Creating DSN Entries". This part takes a long time. |
| 34. |
After the DSN box disappears you will see other windows flash on the screen. If you have Access 2000 installed on your computer, you will see that initialized, also a window labeled "Summit Registration Utility" then "Summit Administration Manager" all these are normal. The final window will declare that Peak setup has been completed. It may or may not ask to restart the computer. Select 'Finish'. One course has been installed via the network. Repeat these steps for other courses. You won't have to do the Access Runtime setup again. |
